What does neurodiversity mean in practice?

What traits are included within neurodiversity?

These are not simply diagnoses; they can also be understood as different ways in which brains function and process information.

ADHD may involve differences in attention regulation, executive functioning, impulse control, and activation. Learning differences such as dyslexia primarily affect certain cognitive processes, particularly those related to reading and written language.

How does neurodiversity affect everyday life?
The everyday experience of a neurodivergent person can vary greatly depending on the demands of the environment, available support, and the person’s individual strengths. In education, neurodiversity may be reflected in different ways of learning and processing information. While one student may thrive in a traditional classroom environment, another may struggle with its structure while demonstrating exceptional creativity or problem-solving abilities in other contexts.
In the workplace, neurodivergent people may experience both challenges and significant strengths. A person with ADHD may experience periods of intense focus when working on something highly engaging. An autistic person may bring systematic thinking, precision, and strong attention to detail to certain tasks. At the same time, noisy environments, frequent interruptions, unclear expectations, or implicit social norms may create additional challenges.

At the same time, strengths may include seeing connections that others do not immediately notice or becoming deeply immersed in areas of interest.
How can neurodiversity be recognized?
Neurodivergence can be recognized at different stages of life, and the way it presents can change over time. In children, it may become visible through differences in responses to sensory input, strong interests in particular subjects, difficulties with transitions, or challenges in social situations. In adults, difficulties with working memory, executive functioning, sensory overload, or social exhaustion may become more noticeable, particularly when everyday demands increase.
Formal diagnosis varies depending on the neurodevelopmental condition and healthcare system. Assessment may involve interviews, observation, evaluation of functioning, developmental history, and information gathered from different sources. A comprehensive assessment can help clarify an individual’s needs and identify appropriate support.
Self-reflection and recognizing one’s own experiences can also be important. Many adults begin to recognize neurodivergent traits in themselves later in life, for example after learning more about neurodiversity or through experiences within their own families. Self-identification can be meaningful in understanding one’s experiences and building self-awareness, although it does not replace a formal assessment when a diagnosis is needed for access to specific services or accommodations.

How can we support a neurodivergent person?

In childhood, timely support can provide an important foundation for later wellbeing and functioning. Depending on the individual’s needs, support may include occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, educational support, or neuropsychiatric coaching.
For young people and adults, appropriate educational and work environments, practical strategies, and support for everyday functioning can make a significant difference.
Practical tools may include noise-cancelling headphones or hearing protection for sensory sensitivities, visual instructions and schedules to support executive functioning, weighted products for sensory regulation, and digital tools for organizing everyday activities. For some neurodivergent people, stimming – repetitive movements or sensory activities that support self-regulation – can also be an important and beneficial strategy.
Adapting the environment is often one of the most effective ways to provide support. In education, this may include additional time, a quieter working environment, clear instructions, or alternative ways of completing tasks. In the workplace, flexible working arrangements, the possibility of remote work, clear expectations, and reducing unnecessary sensory overload can support both wellbeing and performance.
Perhaps the most important form of support is increasing understanding. When family members, teachers, colleagues, and other people around a neurodivergent person understand the principles of neurodiversity, misunderstandings can decrease and individual strengths have more space to emerge.
